The siege is not kept in a museum here. It is the street you are standing on.
The tunnel under the runway, the red resin poured into shell scars in the pavement, the ridgelines the guns sat on, and the long drive east to Srebrenica. Many of these are led by people who were here for it. Take the tunnel and the front line together and the rest of the city reads differently afterwards.
The best of Bosnia is an hour past the last bus stop.
Rafting the Neretva out of Konjic, the Tara canyon along the Montenegrin line, a shepherd village at fifteen hundred metres where the roofs are still stone slab. The country is mostly mountain, and almost none of it is on the day-trip circuit.
Three things that only happen in Bosnia.
Old towns and mountain rivers are everywhere in the Balkans. A bridge rebuilt from its own dredged stones, a dervish house built into the mouth of a cliff, and a tunnel dug under a live runway are not.
The Old Bridge at Mostar
The 1566 span came down under tank fire in November 1993. What stands now was cut from the same quarry and set with original stones dredged out of the Neretva and numbered on the bank. Young men still jump the twenty-four metres off it through the summer, for money, after a long ceremonial hesitation on the parapet.

The Tekke at Blagaj
The Buna does not seep out of the ground, it comes out of a two-hundred-metre cliff at full volume and full cold. A dervish house was built onto the rock beside it around 1520 and is still standing, all whitewash and dark timber, with the water running past the terrace. Shoes off at the door.

The Tunnel of Hope
Between 1993 and 1995 the only way in or out of Sarajevo was a metre-wide tunnel dug by hand under the airport runway, shored with timber and carrying a fuel line and a rail. Twenty-five metres survive under the house at Butmir where it surfaced. The rest of the visit is the exhibition around it.

Four Bosnian bookings that will not wait.

Coppersmiths hammering in Bascarsija, a line laid into the pavement where the Ottoman city meets the Austrian one, and a tunnel museum out by the runway. The old town is small enough to walk. Everything that explains it is uphill.
The tunnel, and the hills above it
Under the airport runway there is eight hundred metres of hand-dug tunnel that kept the city supplied for three years. Twenty-five of those metres are still open under a private house in Butmir. Most of these carry on up to the front line and the bobsleigh run.
Bascarsija on foot, in two hours
Copper alley, the Gazi Husrev-beg mosque, the corner where Franz Ferdinand was shot, and the paving line where the Ottoman city stops and the Habsburg one begins. The cheapest orientation in the Balkans.
Tito, the Olympics, and what came after
The 1984 bobsleigh run is still up on Trebevic, cracked and sprayed, with the whole city underneath it. The same road takes in the abandoned Olympic hotels and, further out at Konjic, the bunker Tito built for a war that never came.
From November the falls run cold and the mountain roads shut.
Winter closes the rafting, ends the swim at Kravice and puts snow across the track to Lukomir. It does nothing at all to the two things Sarajevo is really about. The siege tours run all year, the coffee houses are warmer than the street, and nobody is queueing.
Kravice is a hundred metres of waterfall you are allowed to swim under.
The Trebizat drops in a horseshoe into a pool you can wade into from May to September, with a rowing boat working across it and picnic tables in the trees. Go early or go late. The middle of a July day belongs to four coaches from the coast.
